Obituary of Constance Mary Nelsen

Constance Mary Nelsen, born on October 31,1927 died peacefully on April 21, 2009 with her family by her side. Connie, as she was known, graduated from Julliard School of Music, joined the Foreign Service and met her lifelong companion, Norman in the Philippines. They were soon married and returned to the United States to raise a family. Norman and Connie settled in University Place and raised three girls, Leslie, Erica and Victoria. The family spent summers at Sylvanrude, the beach home on Case Inlet. In their retirement years both Connie and Norman enjoyed extensive travel throughout Europe. Connie was blessed with 2 grandchildren, a husband who adored her, children who were devoted to her, and her storytelling. Music was also an important part of Connie’s life. She was instrumental in the early growth and development of the Tacoma Opera Society, and worked tirelessly on countless productions, as a choral master, performer, or doing various public relations jobs. Her musical talents were broadened when she took a position teaching voice at Franklin Pierce, and later taught at her home. She committed many volunteer hours to telling stories at nursing homes. That was her passion. She also gave many hours to helping students at Chambers Elementary school learn to read. Connie truly believed in books. She will be deeply missed by all, but celebrated knowing that she is now reading and writing her own story. Mom’s ashes will be scattered over Case Inlet at sunset. ” If you don’t know the trees you may be lost in the forest, but if you don’t know the stories you may be lost in life.” Siberian Elder
