Obituary of Jean Howard Freeman

Jean Howard Freeman was born on October 24, 1914, in Brodhead, Wisconsin, the only child of Delton Clement Howard, a World War I pilot, and Florence (Woodling) Howard. She died on September 17, 2009, in Milton, WA. Mrs. Freeman attended Brodhead High School and Beloit College (WI). She is survived by a son, Richard H. Freeman (Boulder Junction, WI); a daughter, Martha Kate Freeman (Federal Way, WA); three granddaughters, Molly Bess Alm (Denver, CO), Rachel Kate Alm (Olympia, WA), Emily Johanna Alm (Tacoma, WA); and a great granddaughter, Linnea Spring Whisenhunt. A son, James Patrick Freeman, predeceased her. Mrs. Freeman’s ancestors were pioneer settlers in southern Wisconsin. Her life and activities involved being a mother, a volunteer, and a sportswoman. In 1960 she appeared in Who’s Who in Wisconsin as a civic worker for her community. She won four city golf championships in Beloit and was inducted in 1992 into the Beloit Historical Society’s Sports Hall of Fame. An avid participant and former president of the Beloit Tennis Club, she contributed to both golf and tennis clubs throughout the Beloit area. Mrs. Freeman had lived for many years in Colorado Springs, CO, prior to moving to Washington in 2007. She continued to volunteer in Colorado Springs at Rockrimmon Elementary, Eagleview Middle School, and the Garden of the Gods Visitor’s Center. She also served as a volunteer at the 50th Women’s U.S. Open Golf Tournament. She was an enthusiastic bridge player and an active member of Delta Gamma sorority. Her dearest love was extended to her daughter, who was unselfish in her devotion. “To Molly, Rachel, Emily, and Linnea: darlings, farewell to you and the youth I have spent with you. I love you.” Grandma (GG) Ecclesiastes 3:3, 1-8, was her favorite Bible passage. At her request, there will be no services. Memorial donations may be made in her name to: Beloit Boys and Girls Club, 1851 Moore St., Beloit, WI 53511.
