Obituary of Sidney R. Luttinen

Born June 11,1934 in Seattle, WA and passed away at his home surrounded by his family and friends July 12, 2009 in Tacoma, WA. Sidney graduated from the UW in 1956 with a BS degree in Chemistry and was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity, UW Alumni, and an avid Husky football season ticket holder since 1971. Sidney served 30 years and retired from the US Army Reserves on 6/11/ 94 as a Lieutenant Colonel. During his service he received the Legion of Merit Award and served on the command and staff at the University of Nevada (Reno). Sidney was employed by Penwalt Corp. from 4/1/1957 in the sales department and in 1972 he became the district sales manager and later in 1981 became the district purchasing agent retiring in 8/1/90. Later in life, he followed Tacoma HS sports and received the Tacoma School Senior Citizen District Gold Card Club for his support of youth activities and was also a past member of the Tacoma Elks. Throughout his life he had a passion to travel and see the world including China, South America and his native ancestry Finland. Sidney is survived by his loving companion Fran Schruefer; Son, Michael (Wendy) Luttinen; daughter, Susan Luttinen; twin-brother, Carlyle (Sandra) Luttinen; grand-daughter, Kendal Luttinen; step-son, Steve (Sherri) Smolinske; step-daughter, Kathy(John) Riggs; 4 step-grandchildren, Nicole, Chris, Derek and Jacob. Preceded in death by beloved wife Judith Smolinske in 2002 and son Kenneth Luttinen in March of 2009. Service with full military honors to be held 11:15AM Thursday, 7/16 at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th St., Kent, WA 98042. Memorial service to follow at 1:30PM Thursday, 7/16 at Skyline Presbyterian Church, 6301 Westgate Blvd, Tacoma, WA 98406. The family wishes to thank Dr. Wadsworth, Heart Warming Care, Multicare Hospice. Memorial Donations can be made to the American Cancer Society or Skyline Presbyterian.
