Zach, you were much more than a friend to me, you were a brother. To Kassi, you were the big brother she never had. We will forever miss your support, your laughter and humor, and the unconditional love that you gave. You made movies and books come to life in a way that no one else did. I dont think Ill ever meet someone who will tolerate swimming in the Puget Sound as much as you. Kassi and I spent a lot of fun times in Utah with you that will forever be remembered and laughed about. You will be deeply missed by both of us and hopefully we will all, one day, be able to see you again and catch up on everything. Kassi and I want to extend our thought and prayers to your family. May they find strength and comfort remembering the wonderful life you lived and the smiles you brought to their faces. God bless.

Zach was a warm, friendly man who always came across to me in a positive and upbeat manner. His death was a great shock. He is the type of person one remembers and whose death is greatly regretted.

I was deeply saddened when I heard of Zach's passing. Zach and I went to highschool together and were great friends. He always could make you laugh and lighten up the room. I will never the forget the unconditional love he had for his parents, especially when his mom would pick us up from somewhere and she would pinch Zach's cheeks and tell him how much she loved him as soon as well all got into the car. There are so many memories and fun times I will hold close to my heart. Since highschool I hadn't seen Zach that much, but I do know that those he met thorughout these last ten years he showed that same loyalty and friendship. I will not be able to attend the memorial today, as I am visting relatives out of state, but please know that today Zach and his family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am David Swanson's mother. Zach is one of my most favorite of David's friends. Every time I saw Zach he had a great big smile and hug for me. He always made me laugh and was such a joy to be around. I can't imagine how difficult Zach's death is for you. I know it has been difficult for David to accept, but spending time with you two and the boys last evening was good for him. He truly enjoyed your sharing with him and learning about Zach's childhood. David's first concern when he learned of Zach's death was you two. He admires the great relationship you all have and the tremendous love Zach has for you. David and Zach's friendship and memories will be cherished by David forever. Friend's like Zach are very precious and I am so fortunate that David knows that. Thank you for what you and Zach have given David and for being a part of his life. Love, Karen Swanson

Everyone loved him!!!!! I didn't see Zach too often since middle school and in high school, but we remained close on the days I did see him and I still considered him family just like all my friends I grew up with in Tacoma!!! One thing that has always stuck to me, and I'm sure almost everyone who knew him, is the feeling you got when you very first saw him. Once you saw Zach enter the room or pull up in the car, you started to smile, because you knew you were about to laugh. You knew that the first thing he said to you was going to be something that made everyone in room start laughing. I think that's why everyone loved the guy... they knew if Zach was around, you and everyone else with you was going to be smiling until he left. I'm really going to miss him!!! Steve Johnson

I was one of the fortunate people who was blessed to have spent some time with Zach on his last night with us. I loved him dearly and was always overjoyed when I got to spend time with him. He was a friend that was always there to protect me and he always let me know he cared. My heart goes out to his family and friends as I know personally I will never forget him and always remember how he was larger than life.

My heartfelt sympathy goes out to you, Mr. & Mrs Stewart, in the loss of your special son. If I could only use one word to describe Zach, I would choose loyal. I first met Zach when he and my son became friends in High School. He was affectionately known as 'Zach attack.' Zach at one time told me he would do anything for my son. He was the kind of person that I knew meant it. I will miss knowing that he could be there for him for whatever came up. And that Daniel could confide in him and know it would stay between them. Zach came to work for Narrows Heating in the fall of 2004--and again showed himself to be loyal as a co-worker and employee, always willing to go the extra mile. He was also a cheerful co-worker and could make you smile under the most trying of conditions with his wit and humor. I know that Zach was also a son that any parent would be proud of--he consistently had compliments about his parents and the love he felt for you both was quite obvious. Zach, you leave us with an exemplary example of what loyalty is and should be. You were all of that in your positions as friend, co-worker, and I'm sure your parents would say, loving son. Thank you for being that example. You touched lives in a special way with your kindness and gentleness.

There are no words to convey the deep sadness we feel. The loss of your only child has 'stunned' many. My last memory of your Zach will remain etched in my heart forever....an evening swim in the warm waters of Hood Canal, and Zach's broad and infectious smile as he finished. (He made the distance and the stroke look so easy). Please know he will live forever in our hearts. Our deepest sympathy to you and your family.
