Obituary of Jean Sadler Young

Jean Sadler Young
1927-2022

Jean Young, 95, died Saturday, May 14, in University Place, Washington.
 

Jean was born on Jan. 10, 1927, in Elmira, New York, to Robert and Lena Sadler. She grew up in Elmira and graduated with a BA in sociology-psychology. In 1954, she married her beloved husband Lou Young (d. June 2021), who also was born and raised in Elmira. Jean taught elementary school until the couple started a family.

Jean lived most of her adult life in San Jose, California, where she was a member of the California State Button Society. She won many awards for her antique button displays. She loved all kinds of critters and was a long-time member of the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory. Together, she and Lou rescued and rehabbed many birds, including hummingbirds, owls, hawks and vultures. A mockingbird named Hershel and a ground squirrel named Grayson had the run of their home for a time. She and Lou were also members of the National Audubon Society and many other conservation organizations.

Jean’s other interests included crafts, sewing, knitting, crochet and jewelry-making. She was always trying to learn new crafts and techniques. She was an avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction. She enjoyed eating out – especially at seafood restaurants – and especially loved indulging in a cocktail or two.

Jean and Lou traveled extensively. Their adventures included trips to Europe, Belize, Costa Rica, Australia, New Zealand, Ukraine, an Alaskan Cruise and many long car and RV journeys in the United States.

Jean is survived by her three children, Rebecca Young of Tacoma, Washington, Penelope Young of Melrose; Massachusetts, (Thomas Dick),Timothy Young of Fairfield, California, (Gail); eight grandchildren and four grandkids-in-law: Halley, Ben, Jillian, Noah, Joshua, Connor, Lauren, Olivia, (Chuck), (Abby), (Stephen) and (Anna); two great grandchildren, Thorin and Maya, plus one due in November. Jean and Lou’s son, Christopher Young, died in 1968. She also leaves behind goddaughter, Cynthia Reinhardt and her family. 

Jean will be cremated at Edwards Memorial, of University Place, Washington. At her preference, there will be no service. Donations in her memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org). A particular sadness of her past few years was watching Lou decline and succumb to that cruel disease. Donations could also go to the San Francisco Bay Bird Observatory (sfbbo.org), where she and Lou donated many hours of volunteer effort.
