I first met Caroline when she was hired to teach third grade at Chambers Primary in University Place. We had six classes of third graders that year. After a teaching exchange in Australia, she joined the staff at Evergreen Primary when it was a very new school. I will never forget the echo song "Fly Like an Eagle" that Caroline shared from her teaching experience in Australia. Our staff and students had chosen an eagle for our school mascot, and Caroline thought it would be nice if we could sing the song at assemblies to build a feeling of community and togetherness. With the music teacher's help and a few practice sessions, we were soon singing the song at our assemblies. Decades later, I believe this beautiful song continues to be a tradition at Evergreen Primary, thanks to Caroline.
When Caroline and Scott got married, my family and I attended their garden wedding on Star Lake. I remember that their wedding day was the first day of that summer without rain. In fact, it was a sunny beautiful day and Caroline looked gorgeous in her lovely gown. It was a perfect day.
Caroline was always so genuine in her thoughts and concerns about students. She cared deeply about doing the right thing for kids. We've talked "math" a few times in the past couple of years as she aimed to deepen her understanding of strategies that could help her students. She was a true advocate for children.
My heart goes out to Scott and Eric and all of Caroline's family. She will be greatly missed. May her soul rest in peace.
