Obituary of Johnnie L. Horne

Johnnie Louise Horne was born August 5, 1937 in Plantersville, Alabama to Mr. and Mrs. John Campbell. She confessed Christ at an early age at the Grove Hill A.M.E Zion Church, under the leadership of her grandfather Presiding Elder Howard Suttles. Johnnie moved to Detroit, Michigan in 1956. In July 1959, they met and after a three-year courtship, married Charles A. Horne. Charles was a military man and his military career gave them an opportunity to travel extensively both home and abroad, including Japan, Germany and other foreign places. Her favorite cities of travel were Toronto and Victoria Canada. While in Germany, they gave birth to two sons. Years later, two additional children were born to the union. She also was a foster parent. They moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1963 and joined the St. John Baptist Church. She was the President of the Minister’s Wives Ministry and served on the Recovery Team by calling and visiting the sick. She enjoyed Sunday School and attended regularly. In May 2005, the church awarded her the Mother of the Year Award. She also was a 20+-year member of the Tacoma Chapter – Washington Association of Minister’s Wives and Minister’s Widows where she served as Treasurer. She was active in the International Chapter as well, and coined a medallion in honor of the Founder, Elizabeth Coles Bouey. She also designed a pendent for the International Association of Minister’s Wives and Minister’s Widows. During her time of employment, she attended Tacoma Community College. She was employed with White Center and later joined the Sears and Roebuck Company where she worked for 27 years. Johnnie had many hobbies such as reading, playing scrabble, cooking for her family and gardening with her grandchildren. They planted pumpkin seeds and strawberry plants. Like the Little Red Hen she watered and nursed the plants, however; when the squirrels ate the pumpkin seeds and the birds ate the side of the strawberry that was the largest berry on the plant, she replaced the plants without the children knowing it. Once again, grandma saves the day! She is preceded in death by her son Andre` M. Horne. She leaves to cherish her memories her husband of 52 years, the Reverend Dr. Charles A. Horne, 3 sons, Charles V. (Sandra), Michael A., Roudrik; grandchildren Daniel C. and Faith D. Horne; 3 sisters – Mary Nunn of Birmingham, AL, Ola Shelton (Reverend Dr. J. Vincent Shelton) of Sparks NV, Bettie Larkin (Henry) of Tacoma, WA and 1 brother Clifford Campbell (Tessie) of Sparks NV; numerous extended family and friends. The Celebration of Life will be held Friday, May 6, 2011 at 11:00AM, St. John Church Transformation Ministries International, 2001 South “J” St., Tacoma, WA 98405.
