Obituary of Yvonne Celestine Maitland

Our loving mother, grandmother and friend Yvonne passed away March 19th. She was born September 21, 1922 in Audun-le-Tiche, (Lorraine) France as the only child to Celestine Jacynte Gianolie Hoffmann and Albert Jean Hoffmann. She grew up in her birth town where her grandmother's family Jubert lived for generations. The town is located near the border to Luxembourg, where her father was raised. After schooling, she worked as a secretary in the town's factory. During that time, World War II commenced and her town was occupied by Germany. In December 1944 she met her future husband, William Ford Maitland, who was stationed in her town with General Patton's 3rd Army. When the war concluded, he returned home to America and they kept in touch. Eventually, in August of 1946 she boarded the Athos II and traveled to America to be married. Missing her greatly, her parents followed her to Tacoma, where they proudly became U.S. citizens. Yvonne was a wonderful mother to two children. She worked as a legal secretary for many years, retiring in her 70's. She resided in her north end home for the past 56 years until her passing. She lived her life with great energy and passion, never sitting still for very long. She loved to party, dance, and visit with family and friends. Her many travels included Europe, Ireland, Mexico, and Hawaii. In her later years she enjoyed a regular poker party with her French girlfriends. Yvonne was always a joy to be around, smiling, laughing, and sharing her joie de vivre. She lived for her children and family and shared valuable life lessons, strength and understanding. As an animal lover, Yvonne always had pets, most recently her beloved dogs, Bijou and Roxy. She is survived by her children, William A. Maitland (Michele) and Patricia C. Hickey (John), grandchildren, Michele Maitland, Jason Cody Bennett, Adrian John Maitland, John Caelin Hickey, and Jessica Chantal Hickey, six great-grandchildren, Ashley, Jacob, Tobias, Benedict, Anastasia, Xavier and one due in April. At Yvonne’s request, a family celebration will be held. Arrangements by Edwards Memorial 253-566-1008
