Obituary of Barbara Payne Glick

Barbara was born in Fremont, Nebraska. She began taking piano lessons from her mother at age 4. She earned a Bachelors Degree in Music from Doane College in Crete, Nebraska. When she was 21, she was one of the first two recipients of the Masters Degree in Music from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. She began teaching at the University at age 21---the youngest member of the music faculty. She performed as guest soloist with the Lincoln Symphony Orchestra in September, 1944. She was awarded a full fellowship for the 1945-1946 academic year at The Juilliard Graduate School of Music in New York City, NY. On December 20, 1945, Barbara married Gregg F. Glick, a graduate of West Point. Gregg joined the Army Air Corps so that he could become a pilot. He later joined the U.S. Air Force. Barbara continued to perform and to teach piano, despite many moves to various Air Force bases. She was widowed in 1972. She moved to Washington state in 1973. She resided first in Renton, then later in Bellevue. She began work on her doctoral degree at the University of Washington, where she continued her piano studies with Randolph Hokanson. She was a member of the Ladies Musical Club and the Washington State Music Teachers Association. She was an extraordinary musician, talented artist, devoted wife and mother. During the last three years, she lived in Tacoma, Washington, most recently at the Weatherly Inn. Her family includes two children, a son, Dean, who resides with his wife, Karen, in Carlisle, Pennsylvania; a daughter, Melissa, who lives in Tacoma with her husband, Tom; two granddaughters, Megan and Emily; a sister, Bonnie, who lives in Puyallup with her husband, Mike; two nieces, Eleni, who lives in Nevada City, California, with her husband Jeff; and Stephanie, who lives with her husband, Ed, in Roy, Washington. Stephanie’s son, Dean, lives in Madison, Wisconsin. Her daughter, Natalie, resides in the Seattle area. A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church, 310 North K St in Tacoma on Friday, August 28, 2009, at 10AM, with burial to follow at Masonic Memorial Park, 455 North St, in Tumwater at 1PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Barbara Payne Glick Scholarship for Piano at The Juilliard School, 60 Lincoln Plaza, New York, NY 10023, Attn: Victoria Brand.
