Obituary of Glenda Ethel Myers

Glenda was born on May 3, 1926 in Shafter, California and passed away on March 2, 2010 in University Place, WA. She is survived by her daughter Terry (Norman) Rickey of Gig Harbor, and son, Alan Halverson of Winlock, WA; grandchildren Cassie, Greg, Tanya and Neda; great-granddaughters, Megan and Zoë; as well as her sister Marie of Tacoma and brother Earl of San Francisco. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Myers. Glenda graduated from Lincoln High School in Tacoma, class of 1944, where she met her first husband and father of her children, Stan Halverson. She would often fondly reminisce about glee club and was humming a song until the end. After she and Stan divorced, she met her second love, Roy Myers. They enjoyed travel, planning their new home in Gig Harbor, and photography. She was especially proud of awards she won in a national Kodak photography contest held in the 1960’s. Glenda retired from civil service after working for several years in the Adjutant General’s office at Fort Lewis. She greatly enjoyed her work there, but was glad to retire, travel to Hawaii with Roy, and spend time planting more roses and puttering with her orchids in the greenhouse. Glenda was best known for her love of roses and all things horticultural. She was a long-time member of the Westgate Garden Club, as well as the Tacoma Rose and Orchid Societies. She was happiest working in her garden and sharing her knowledge with others. Starts of plants from her garden are scattered all over Pierce County. She was also known for her lovely floral arrangements. She was proud of the many blue ribbons she won in flower shows. Many local brides have been graced by the exquisite bridal bouquets she designed for their wedding. She was also greatly involved with Citizen’s Against Tolls when the second Narrows Bridge was proposed. We wish to publicly thank Hearthside Manor in University Place for their tender and compassionate care of her in the final year of her life. They helped ease the pain of her passing and we shall be forever grateful for that. A small memorial is being planned.
