Obituary of James Orben Nunn

Jim was born to James A and Bessie (Lemons) Nunn on August 1, 1939, in Attalla. After being diagnosed with cancer just weeks ago, Jim passed away on March 26, 2010, in hospice care in University Place, WA, with his loving family at his side. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Suzanne and brother Billy Ray Nunn. He is survived by his four children and grandchildren: Jim and Margo (Wyatt, Maizey) Nunn; Mike and Hayley (AJ, Garrett) Nunn; Bridget and Dave (David, Dalton, Corrin, Olivia) Burns; and Pam and Darrell (Seth) Todd. Jim married Ellen Slaughter Nunn in 1994 and became step-dad to her children: Doug and Shannon (Dustin, Danny, Jamian) Gentry and Diana and Gary (Nick) Politika. He is also survived by his Alabama family: brother Calvin Nunn and sisters Frances (Roy) Phillips, Patsy (James) Lee and a large extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. Jim served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Washington National Guard 1118th Transportation Unit. He retired from the City of Tacoma Water Department as a heavy equipment operator after 30 years. He and Ellen enjoyed their retirement years traveling throughout the United States and made twice yearly trips to Alabama, usually coinciding with a race at Talladega. He loved his grandchildren. He enjoyed NASCAR and supported #9 Kasey Kahne from their hometown of Enumclaw, WA. He also enjoyed every opportunity to operate a “dirt mover.” He was a true Southern Gentleman and will forever be remembered by those who loved him. At his request there will be no services. Donations may be made in his name to the Victory Junction Gang camp at 4500 Adam’s Way, Randleman, N.C.,27317.
