Obituary of Marianne Wall

Marianne Harward Wall was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on November 3, 1932. She lived in Salt Lake City during her early childhood, then moved to Blackfoot, Idaho. There she made friendships which lasted a lifetime. Each summer she faithfully drove to Blackfoot to see her friends. Marianne was a serious student in school. She excelled in history and English. In addition, she loved the arts and studied piano privately. Marianne was a beautiful pianist, initially majoring in music. There was always a pioneer spirit in Marianne and she was proud of it. Her family heritage was a rich one, with descendants from the first Mormon pioneers of Utah. Today there are historical landmarks from both sides of her family. In 1970 Marianne moved to Anchorage, Alaska after living in New Orleans, Minneapolis, Mercer Island, and many other cities. She was a guidance counselor, an AP English teacher, and an AP European History teacher at Dimond High School. Teaching and mentoring young men and women were passions of hers. In 1986 she retired from the Anchorage School District and returned to Washington State. Retirement didn’t last long for Marianne, however. In 1987 she took a position at Holy Names Academy in Seattle, WA as an English teacher and a college counselor. It always felt to Marianne that Holy Names was “meant to be” and that the staff and co-workers were a family to her. In early 1989 Phillip Wall, Marianne’s husband, passed away and the Holy Names “family” was there to offer support. Marianne continued enjoying her teaching, symphony concerts, opera, Fifth Avenue Theatre, musicals, ballet performances, evenings with special speakers, movies, traveling, etc. In time, Ted Hurwitz became her loving companion. Life was good. They shared all the same interests. Marianne thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her family and they thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her. She lived life to the fullest and everyone felt her exuberance, friends and family alike. Surviving Marianne are her companion--Ted Hurwitz; three daughters – Annette Kebsch, Miriam Fredrich, and Victoria Haner; five grandchildren – Scott Schulz, Stephanie Glover, Lindsay Lo’pez, Daniel Pace, Lauren Pace; seven great-grandchildren; a brother – Jon Harward; a sister – Virginia Lewis; a niece – Elizabeth Harward; a nephew – Robert Harward; a great-nephew – Jacob Harward; and two cousins – Wendy Amendola and Peter Emerson. Marianne will be laid to rest at Wights Fort Cemetary, 9000 South West and Bangerter Highway, West Jordan, Utah 84088. Donations in her memory can be made to either ASPCA (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) or to the Marianne Wall Scholarship Endowment at Holy Names Academy, 728 21st Avenue East, Seattle, WA 98112.
