Steve was a unique man. He had many talents that he was able to enjoy. He always had an open door even for burdened friends . He came willingly to help when there was hard work to be done. And I will miss Steve not only for the fun times spent playing tennis, skiing or trying to play bridge, but for the friend that was always there and the laughs he would bring with his many great stories. I am sorry for his children having to miss him. He tried hard to be a good parent. He was so proud of Gretchen, a civil engineer. Murphy is so easy going and if I remember correctly, tossed a few balls with Melanie. I can remember Steve helping Melanie, my daughter, with fast pitch. She lettered all 4 years of high school. I wish I knew he was ill for I would have liked to return some of the help he gave me. I will miss Steve.

I knew Steve in Kingman, Ariz., where he kept all of us rookie reporters on our toes, kept me laughing and taught me a lot about crafting news stories, a skill he had honed very well. He built a beautiful house of rocks for his family and loved his children beyond measure. I only now learned of his death, but I send my belated sympathy to his family.
