Obituary of Linda Maria Self

Linda was born as Hur Yong Hi in Chungnam, South Korea on February 19, 1933 and passed away at home on January 31, 2010 after a long courageous battle with cancer. From the age of 8 years old, she was raised by her grandmother in Seoul, Korea. She married James F. Self, Jr.,a U.S. Army officer, on December 1, 1955, via a civil ceremony in Seoul, Korea and became Yong-Hi Self. On July 7, 1957 she was baptized in the Catholic faith as Linda Maria Self. Her marriage was validated on July 8, 1957 at St. Peter Claver Church in Waterloo, Iowa. She was known as Linda to almost everyone who knew her. Linda traveled extensively during Jim’s long military career. After Jim retired in 1975, they settled in Tacoma, Washington, where she grew to love. She enjoyed gardening, fishing, shellfish gathering, and hunting wild mushrooms over the years. She was also active in the Tacoma Chapter of the United Ostomy Association. She is survived by her husband, Jim, of 54 years; son, Jon of Tacoma; and daughters, Anna of Riverside, California and Janet of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; also four grandchildren, Amika, Alex, Andy and Christy. Five siblings survive her: sisters Nina Stokes of Tacoma and Hur Ran in Seoul, Korea; brothers Louis Hur of Colorado, Ben Hur of Seattle, and Raymond of Chicago, Illinois. There are numerous nieces, nephews and cousins that make up her extended family group. The Franciscan Hospice staff is commended for the loving support given to her. Funeral Service was held Friday 2/5 at St. John Bosco Catholic Church, 10508 112th ST SW, Lakewood, WA 98498. Viewing was at 9:30AM with rosary at 10AM and mass at 11AM with reception to follow. Inurnment service was held Monday 2/8 at 1:15PM at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 SE 240th ST., Kent, WA 98042. Arrangements by Edwards Memorial 253-566-1008.
