Obituary of Arthur John Ando

Arthur J Ando was born in Toledo, Ohio, on May 30, 1917 to Julianna and John H. Ando. He passed on August 3rd, 2010, at his home in Steilacoom at the age of 93, with his family at his side. Art was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ernie, and sister, Norma. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, his sister Marge Troutner, his children Norm(Marie) Linda Swanson, Bonnie Tinsley (Mark), and Al (Mary), 13 grand children,Amy,Hiedi,Karis,Nathan,Tim,Sharie,John,Jonathan,Josh,Jason,Dani,Saul,andChris. and 11 great granchildren, and many neices and nephews. He grew up in Temperance, Michigan attending Bedford School first grade thru high school. He came to Washington in 1949, attending classses at the UW. He moved to Tacoma in 1950 to work at McChord Airforce Base. He met and married Dorothy in 1950. They settled in Parkland for 50 years raised 4 children.They moved to Steilacoom in 2001. Art spent 41 years in military and civilian government service. His career in federal service was spent at Erie Proving Grounds, Ohio, Potomac River Naval Command, Wash DC , and McChord AFB. He worked at McChord for 29 years, retiring from civfil service in 1979. He served in the us navy from 1936 to 1940, then 1942-1946. He was on the USS Independence from its commissioning until the end of the war in 1946. Art enjoyed traveling the Northwest, with kids and wife in tow, visiting family across the US and British Columbia in the 57 Ford station wagon. He fished the lakes and streams, enjoyed watching sports, loved his garden and amazing raspberries, and creatures great and small. we thank the doctors and nursed who cared for him, especially hospice and pallative care, who comforted him in his final days.
