Obituary of James Donald Tredup

James D. Tredup, born Sept. 21st, 1918 to Frederick & Violette Tredup in Chicago, IL, died..... He attended Morgan Park High School, Dartmouth College ('40) and Yale Law School. His law school education was interrupted by WWII. A member of the Marine Corp Reserves, he entered active duty on Feb. 1, 1942. As a Captain with Mortar Company “M”, he was part of the first wave to land on Guadalcanal on Aug.7, 1942. He was nearby his closest childhood friend, Lt. David Cox, when he was killed by enemy gunfire at Matanikau. Major Tredup remained in the Marine Corp Reserves following discharge from active duty in January 1946. After the war, Jim returned to Yale Law School to finish his degree. He practiced in Chicago before moving to Portland,OR where he was a member of the Koerner, Young, McColloch and Dezendorf law firm. He is credited with conceiving in 1962 the idea for the establishment of the small claims division of the Oregon tax court, a concept at the time that was an innovative approach for allowing the small taxpayer their day in court, and one which was later replicated in other states. Jim Tredup left his memories of WWII on the battlefield, and years later broke bread in fellowship with several of the men that he had fought in face-to-face combat. He developed a great understanding and appreciation for the Japanese culture, and became heavily involved with US-Japan trade relations. The relationships he formed with many people of Japanese ancestry developed into valued friendships that were among his most treasured. He was a member of the original sister city committee between Portland and Sapporo, Japan and participated in numerous cultural exchanges. While practicing as a tax attorney, Mr. Tredup was also Chairman of the Board of the A.L. Randall Company, a century old national wholesale floral supply business having a rich heritage associated with the development of early Chicago. He continued to hold this position while retiring from his law practice to live in Molokai, Hawaii, Steilacoom, WA, Norwich, NY, Gainesville, FL and Tacoma, WA. He was preceed in death by his parents, an infant brother, Frederick W. Tredup, Jr, and his beloved dog, Luke. He is survived by: Alice Tredup of Gainesville, FL., his children: Alice Dickas, Patty O'Grady (Bill) of Steilacoom, WA, Fred Tredup (Ziona) of Las Vegas, NV and his grandchildren: John, Jim & Mark Dickas; B.J., Allie (Greg Lawrence) & Cindy O'Grady and Eli & Jadin Tredup. Deepest appreciation to The Weatherly Inn, special caregivers Jazz, Genia, Amber,and Cassandra, and Dr. Birlenbach & staff for their compassionate care the last seven years as well as Franciscan Hospice.
