ENJOY YOUR RIDE As I drove through the Big Sky You made your way to heaven. I wiped away my tears As you were in a better place. I was thankful for the family That could be by your side, And for those of us who put you In our thoughts and prayers. Although the prayers were answered It still does not seem fair. But I know along the way you got to Enjoy your ride. Then the memories, they set in. All the fun and happiness we shared. Oh, the family camping trips Left much for us to discuss. To the fishing excursions That usually were a bust. But the times we spent together Is cherished none the less. We had fun playing games, Cards, board or make up things. You would try to outdo your Brothers and your sister. When it came to gift giving The gags kept getting bigger. When you would go out to sea I would miss you something awful. You would always return with a big hug Looking sharp in your Navy suit. When I would mount my horse You would smile as if to say Enjoy your ride. At my graduation You dressed your best, In a western shirt and cowboy hat To support the college of Ag. You would tell your stories. They got stretched a bit. But you would laugh that laugh And smile after it. The other day Mike delivered A message from me. You asked him to tell me, Thank you for what I said. Now it is my turn dad. Thank you, I love you and Enjoy your ride.

Gary and I worked together for years at Fort Lewis. We played cards for 30 minutes during lunch daily. Gary, Jim (Elmo) Reese and I would regularly have quantity eating contests at local Buffets and office pot lucks. It was amazing how much food he could eat for as normal sized as he was. We always accused him of having a hollow leg. Gary was affectionately nicknamed 'Gomer' by Sidney Sheppard and the night shift computer operators. My nickname was 'Fonz' ayyyyyyyy... They had a lot of idle time for such stuff. All in good fun. We spent lots of time outside for smoke breaks as there was no smoking inside the building. I don't remember Gary ever having a cross work with anyone. He was a pleasure to work with and will be greatly missed.

Gary was a GREAT neighbor. He always had a smile and contagious laugh to share with us. Gary did everything slowly - especially clearing his property - a little space at a time, that is until the big trucks came and chopped down almost all of his trees! We loved watching his newest adventure in landscaping! Dude discovered we had labs- he 'escaped', ran to play at our house - Gary knew he was safe. When our dog 'Hot Rod' went to Dude's house, if Gary was outside, he let Hot Rod in to play. I think Gary felt like this was a 'play date' for Dude! Gary wasn't too mechanically inclined - good thing for him my husband Randy was! Everytime we saw Gary standing over something, just staring at it, wondering why it wouldn't start, Randy would head up the driveway to Gary's rescue. I don't think he knew how us neighbors always kept track of him. If hadn't seen him for several days, I told Randy, 'we have to go check on him!' Gary was always fine! He was a true friend, great neighbor, kind, gentle human being who will be dearly missed. My husband Randy passed June, 2008 - Gary was there for me. I can only guess that Gary is with his 'mechanic' neighbor/friend Randy now in heaven, sharing his laugh and friendship he had an abudance of!! Our heart goes out to his family and dear friends..... Fondly, Melissa, Ryan, and Ashley Johnston.

Gary's conversations were always intersting and often had a different view than most. I do remember his chuckles and his sipping coffee (Maxwell). In his younger years, it was as if you could click onto his conversation and it was informative and as the listener you could learn. John and I were visiting this morning that John followed his example and applied for goverment service after leaving the Navy. Our decision eventually provided well for our family. We shared a history with he and your family. We were all young once.

For 15 years we have been neighbors and friends of Gary. We knew him as a kind and quiet man. There was a period of several months that my husband had to be out of town to take care of his ailing mother. Twice, with no hesitation, Gary drove me to the airport so I could join him. With my husband still gone, I liked to tease Gary and made him blush when I told him he had to be my 'date' for a neighborhood barbecue. One summer as a joke, I baked a fresh blackberry pie, put it in a rather large box, and handing it to him, I said it was a box of stray kittens I was giving him. After that, every blackberry season he would slyly ask if I had anymore 'stray' kittens for him. Gary loved his dog 'Dude,' and took excellent care of him. Anytime we had dinner bones, my husband would take them over for the dog, and he always had something extra for Gary too. My husband and I will miss our friend and extend our condolences to his family. Gary...every small act of kindness you extended was like throwing a pebble into a stream. The ripples traveled great distances and spans of time reaching unknown shores, touching those nearby and others far away.
