My husband Dave and his brothers Nuh and Will and sister Nancy have a complete personal perspective of their Mom Joanne, from when they were little to now. I have a different but equally treasured experience as Joanne’s DIL since 1978.
I missed the fiery young mother/wife/daughter early days in Odessa, WA. I picked up somewhere around the successful North Town Mall days in Spokane. Joanne always seemed very saint-like to me then, with her wide acceptance of different types of people and her patience and kindness. She also loomed very competent, brave, and strong. On an afternoon family hiking adventure at the Bowl and Pitcher, this middle-aged Mom walked lightly over a log bridge 20 feet above the ground, while I scooted across on my bum with my eyes half-shut.
She ‘walked the walk’ as an efficient, helpful partner to her husband Harold ‘Corky’ Keller in all their many work and recreational endeavors. We saw this loving commitment play out long-term with the kind, constant support she gave him through his illness with Alzheimer’s. I won’t forget how she comforted Nancy, the wife of her nephew Craig Siegenthaler. They were making plans to move to Minnesota to be close to Nancy’s mother who was in the first throes of this disease. Joanne said, “It’ll be different, but there’s still plenty of good times left to share with your mother.”
Then in her later years, Joanne took a shift and seemed to relish being allowed to call herself a “grumpy old woman.” She gleefully compared herself to the outspoken dowager played by Dame Maggie Smith on Downton Abbey. Ohhhh dear! But, Joanne, don’t you know you are my saint!?!
Almost 20 years ago we moved to Southern California for Dave’s work. During this time, Dave sent a daily post card to his Mom and initiated lively Sunday phone conversations. We all enjoyed her rare and wonderful visits ‘down south’ for special family occasions. We always fit in day trips to stroll down the Laguna Beach boardwalk and eat fish tacos.
It was a joy that Joanne’s 90th Birthday celebration came before the COVID pandemic halted such grand gatherings. Her party was held in the spacious ‘great room’ at Franke Tobey Jones where her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, as well as friends and extended family from far and near joined in to honor their beloved Joey with a feast of BBQ halibut (courtesy of Steve Evavold.) Memories, hugs, and gifts were shared, speeches were given, and delicious cake was eaten.
Family history and the family land meant the world to Joanne. She took a Memorial Day trek “east of the mountains” in 2018 with Will, Nancy, Steve, Sheyenne, Dave and me to visit gravesites at the cemeteries in Odessa and in Wilson Creek. We had lunch with her sister Carol Evavold (then residing in Odessa at Quail Court) and all had lunch at the city park before visiting the now historic site at Lakeview Ranch where the Evavold’s had raised their family. Joanne stayed in regular contact with Carol, older by ten years, until her death at 99 in 2019.
I remember my very first meeting with Joanne in 1976 after Dave’s graduation from college in Bellingham. His whole family was all standing rather stiffly with ‘the new girl’ in his living room on Northwest Rd. It was Joanne’s comments on the lush, flowering Impatience plants that broke the ice. This was the first of many times that I observed and benefited from her determined focus on vibrant, positive things. Thank you, Joanne!
Love,
Shelly

I treasure the memory of Joanne's daughter Nancy, introducing me to her dear precious mother a few years ago. We had a great time encouraging each other walking from the Toby Jones site to the Point Defience Park's Taste of Tacoma event. We had fun checking out the vendor booths. Nancy gifted me her mother's old Bose radio, which I always reflect on Joanne when I gaze on it.

I was always so very fond of Aunt Joanne. She was such a beautiful lady both inside and out. I'd like to share a memory of Aunt Joanne that I think speaks to her kindness. During the spring of most years, the town of Wilson Creek, WA was under siege from floods that could engulf the whole town very quickly. Our home was in a low lying area that always seemed to get flooded. I remember being carried out of the house, put in a boat at the front steps and carted off to the school, or Mrs. Stiff's and on one occasion Corky and Joanne's home. They were kind enough to let us stay there until the water receded. During our stay, I remember Aunt Joanne asking if I would make hamburger patties for dinner. Of course I said yes but I was terrified because I had never cooked hamburger patties before. I cringe to think what they tasted like. Surely they favored hockey pucks rather than an edible food item. And the salt and pepper - I think I used the contents of both shakers. Joanne however, in her kind way, told me that they were just wonderful and she said she was very proud of me! I loved all my aunts but she holds a special place in my heart. With fond memories, ‘till we meet again dearest Joanne.
Love,
Rosetta
