Roy Lee Bishop was born in Cartersville, Georgia, October 24, 1941. After leaving high school, Roy worked three years as a wildland firefighter for the Georgia Forestry Commission, Bartow County Forestry Unit. Roy said the firefighter job was too dangerous so he enlisted with the Army in 1961. While in the Army, Roy saw combat in the Dominican Republic (1965) and Vietnam (Dec 1968 – Dec 1969).

During his 22 year Army career, some of his many qualifications and duties include Special Forces Operations and Intelligence, jumpmaster, mountain and winter warfare instructor, target analyst, and patrolling, tracking, and sniper instructor. Some of Roy’s assignments include Infantry, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, NC (1962); 196th Light Infantry Brigade, Vietnam (1968); 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, Fort Devens, MA (1972); Special Forces Detachment (Airborne), Bad Tolz, Germany (1975); and 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne), 1st Special Forces, Fort Devens, MA (1981).

Roy retired from the Army January 1, 1983, as an E-8, First Sergeant, and settled in Tacoma, WA, where he worked as a security guard for many years until his passing. Roy passed away at home on October 27, 2021, after a short battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed.

Roy is survived by his wife of 34 years Norma (Dove) Bishop, step-daughters Yvonne (Dove) Power and Marlene (Dove) Arp, step-sons Robert Dove and Donald Dove, sister Betty (Bishop) Barrow and family of Glennville, Georgia, and nephew Rusty Howell and family of Chattanooga, Tennessee. Memorial services will be held on December 2, 2021, 1 pm, at Tahoma National Cemetery, Maple Valley, WA.
