Obituary of Mitchell Gilliam Washburn

Mitchell Washburn was born in Tacoma, WA to Hiram and Rachel Washburn. He died peacefully at home in University Place. He recently enjoyed celebrating his 95th birthday with family and friends.

Mitch grew up in Tacoma and was drafted towards the end of WWII between his junior and senior year in high school. He survived an enemy attack in battle with a gun shot wound and received a purple heart. When he returned, he graduated from Lincoln High School and the College of Puget Sound (UPS).

Around 1965, Mitch opened University Place Insurance Agency, which he successfully ran until he sold the business and retired. He was a founding member and President of the Tacoma Narrows Rotary Club. Mitch was an active member of the University Place Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed many life long friends he met there. Mitch always enjoyed helping others and was well respected for his integrity and honesty.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram and Rachel, sister Virginia, and his brother Weldon.

Mitchell is survived by the love of his life, Eloise (they were married for 73 years), his children Stephen (Linda), Wendy Keene (David), Karl (Pattie), his grandchildren Daneel Smith (Joey), their children (his great grandchildren): Jordyn and Taylor, and Mark (Kristin). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the UPPC Church, VA, and CHI Franciscan Hospice for all of their help.

He lived his life grateful to God for his many blessings and looked forward to discovering heaven.

A memorial service will be held at University Place Presbyterian Church on Monday, July 26th at 2:00. In lieu of flowers, please give to the charity of your choice. To share memories, visit edwardsmemorial.com.
