Donna had a big heart and shared her energy and light with so many. She will be missed in particular by all of the Gold Star Wives. Donna set a wonderful example for all to follow. We are an organization of strong surviving spouses and Donna certainly knew how to "carry on and walk smartly".

Donna was a longtime Volunteer and a great inspiration at the VA Puget Sound Health Care System Tacoma. She was truly one that cared for the Veterans and did so with a Loving and Giving Heart. Her generous and giving way really set the example for many to follow. She truly helped our Veterans in times of Need and during the Season of Giving. She made me laugh so many times! There is one thing she would always say that will be a Memory for ever. She would always tell me "Lets Make It Happen"
We'll miss you Donna.

I would regularly refer to Donna Buck as my “Volunteer Mentor.” She was a Veterans Service Organization’s best-kept secret recruiting tool. Whenever a person was unsure whether to “get involved,” I would introduce them to Donna. She would tell them of her volunteer project-of-the day...of “her boys” (the ALL volunteer staff) at the American Lake Veterans Golf Course...of the Veterans Resource Center at Tacoma Rescue Mission. I would have that VSO’s new member application, in-hand, for that “recruit” to sign.
Donna Buck "ruined" many of my Casino At Sea cruise gaming experiences. My hand would shake as I put that first dollar bill in the slot machine, hearing Donna’s voice in my head: “That dollar bill can buy a pack of toilet paper for a homeless Veteran's family.” “That dollar bill could help buy diabetic socks for a homeless Vet.” I would guiltily return home, with checkbook in hand, to donate to whatever under-funded project Donna had in mind.
Donna was not one to frequent conventions, galas, soirees (unless she was working at a volunteer post). She just couldn’t see the "wasted expense," when there were so many in-need. Also, she belonged to so many non-profits and benevolent organizations…her acceptable excuse was: “If I go to one, I’d have to go to all.” One year, I calculated that Donna attended 63 scheduled non-profit meetings; worked 5-days a week for a local company; collected food and supplies for those In-Need on Discount Tuesdays; and was always hands-on, actively volunteering on a project.
Donna Buck was not subtle. She didn't have time for “such nonsense.” There were lives at stake. “There are homeless Veterans who need blankets, tonight!” “There’s a Veteran’s family who needs diapers, today!” She not only laundered, donated-by-others, used-clothing…she would mend and iron the garments before presenting them to a homeless Veteran. It was about preserving their dignity, and conveying her respect and gratitude for that Veteran's service to our country. Donna bought her first electric food processor, last year. The lack of one didn’t stop Donna Buck from baking hundreds of her Zucchini Cake for the American Lake Veterans (Rehabilitative) Golf Course, the VA hospital, and countless others.
For me, it hasn’t really sunk in how much Donna’s passing will affect us all. My wish is that I can step-up and continue much of what Donna Buck has shown and taught me…in Service to Our Veterans and Community. And that someday, I will confidently look up and say to Donna…”You’ve got it, My Dear.”

I first met Donna Buck on a 2013 night when a Tacoma crew was filming segments of Donna’s activities at an AMVETS Post 1 event. I remember thinking: “What makes her so special?” Before the evening was over, Donna Buck had converted me: an uninvolved party-goer to a Volunteer in Service to Our Veterans. Donna Buck’s recent awards were:
2013 City of Destiny (Tacoma) ADULT SUSTAINED SERVICE AWARD
For Donna’s outstanding volunteer service with Veterans-In-Need and Vulnerable People in our community.
2015 – 2016 AMVETS Post 1 Ladies Auxiliary VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR
Donna was the recipient of the first-ever awarded jacket, which she wore proudly, displaying “Volunteerism for American Veterans” in our area.
2017 - 2018 AMVETS Dept of WA Ladies Auxiliary MEMBER OF THE YEAR
For Donna Buck’s recorded volunteer service mega-hours with WA-State AMVETS’ veterans-related projects and programs.

Donna had left Bismarck/Mandan before I was even born, but I do recall getting to meet and visit with her on a few occasions. What a great lady! So proud of Donna's volunteer work and her beautiful spirit. The lives she touched cannot be calculated.
God Bless you and peace to her son and grandchildren.

What a remarkable person Donna was. She was always available anytime you needed her. Anytime she was needed for bingo problems, she was right there. My favorite thing about her was if I called her, I’d say “ l’ve got a question “. She would respond “Oh God!”. We would laugh. If I had a bingo machine go down, I would be in a panic, she would calm me down. I met Donna in 1979, I will never forget her. She will be greatly missed. R.I.P. my dear. Thank you for all you have done. Caroline Buchanan

Donna was an active member of the South Tacoma Business District for at least 15 years. Her dedication to help others was always a priority with her. If she heard that there was an event happening, she was the first to call to see what she could do to help. If we called her first, she never said "No". She will be greatly missed by all of us.

The community has lost an angel. I had the pleasure of knowing Donna through the bingo industry back in the 80s and reconnected with her last year for the Annual Police Officers Christmas Dinner. Talking with her about all of her volunteer endeavors made me want to strive to be proactive in helping others. I will never be able to compare to what she accomplished but will do my best to honor her legacy. My thoughts and prayers are with the family.

American Lake Veterans Golf Course - all of us here at the American Lake Veterans Golf Course are deeply saddened at the loss of our great friend Donna. She was such a wonderful person and loved by all. I can't think of a single volunteer who has done more for veterans in our local community than Donna Buck. We loved her dearly and will miss her greatly.

On October 11, 2014, AMVETS Post 1 Ladies Auxiliary had a Veteran Scholarship fundraiser.
Donna always loved to be the cashier if she was available. So this evening from their hard work they raised $2,000.00. A check for that amount went to Cloverpark Tech.College here in Tacoma, WA.
