In Loving Memory, Vondella Horton

Our beloved Vondella Horton, born in Battle Creek, MI, on March 9th, 1950, recently departed us on May 13, 2020.

Vondella Horton was a wonderful mother, sister, daughter, and friend, who touched the lives of many of those around her. A Foster Parent for 25 years, she dedicated her life to helping children and others. From young teen mothers to those who just needed love and guidance. 

During her 25 years of Foster Care she did traditional care, emergency/shelter care, medical/therapeutic care, relative/kinship care, and tribal care.  She always said a child had no chance without the love and support of a family.  She vowed to provide a safe and stable home for those children who couldn’t be with their parents for some reason or another.  An environment that felt like home instead of a group home or other residential center.

She leaves behind her children, Luther Bacon, Nicole Nelson, Selena Moore, and Sha'biez Moore. Along with her beloved granddaughter, Dajonique Vondella Nelson. She also leaves behind her sisters, Alice Clark and Phyllis Jackson, along with many nieces and nephews and friends alike.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Albert Horton & Katherine Hillard, and her beloved brother, Albert Horton Jr.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Vondella will be held at a later date, not yet determined.

If roses grow in heaven,
Lord, please pick a bunch for me,
Place them in my Mother’s arms
and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her I love her and miss her,
and when she turns to smile,
place a kiss upon her cheek
and hold her for a while.

Because remembering her is easy,
I do it every day,
but there’s an ache within my heart
that will never go away.
