Obituary of Rose Mary Newton

Rose Mary Newton came into this world in Woodinville, Washington; born to Antonio (Tony) and Pasqualina Porrotti Zanassi on 16 December 1924.  She grew up on a truck farm there, with a lot of love and vegetables. Through her brother, Leonard Zanassi, she met the love of her life, Ted W Newton, before he left for WWII. Fortunately, she said she would wait for him and he did return.  They enjoyed 73 years of marriage in Seattle, caring for their four children: Nancy, Ted R, Lynne, and Jan.  An amazing homemaker, Rose Mary picked and canned all sorts of fruit, vegetables, and berries.  Summers were a highlight, with her amazing ability to pack a lunch for the whole family for day outings on a 17’ boat in Lake Washington, or provisions for a week at Lake Chelan in a 10x10 tent.  The home she made for her family was packed with abundant love and caring.

Rose Mary was a graduate of Highline High School. She worked at Union Oil before having kids and after they were older, she worked as a bookkeeper for Marine Lumber Service and other small local companies. Her proficiency at math and record keeping enabled companies to have a one-woman office.

Rose Mary and Ted enjoyed many adventures; driving the Al-Can highway, boating to Princess Louisa Inlet and the San Juan Islands, and other adventures on the Pacific Coast and to the southwest canyons.  Her contributions to Des Moines Yacht Club and St Theresa Catholic Church have been appreciated by many friends who enjoyed her quiet wit and steady companionship.  Above all, her immense love for her cherished husband and her children lives on and will be treasured forever.

Rose Mary passed on 12 May 2020 and is survived by her husband Ted (94); her four children: Nancy Plotts, Ted R (Debi) Newton, Lynne (Ron) Whitney, and Jan Newton (Dan Hannafious); and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed.
