Obituary of Kay Merla Gneiting

Katie Gneiting, 63, passed away peacefully February 14th, 2019 in the presence of her husband in Tacoma, WA, where she was able to enjoy the last few months of life with her husband, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson. There will be a remembrance ceremony at Columbus Congregational Church in the next few weeks, as well as a memorial celebration in Leavenworth, WA this summer.

Katie was born in Newburg, Oregon on March 21, 1955 to Hazel and Merle Wetterhus, and moved to Kalispell, Montana around the age of 5, spending the rest of her life in Montana. She graduated from Flathead High School and attended Eastern Montana College with a focus in education and music. She spent 33 years as an elementary school teacher within Columbus Elementary School and also owned and worked for Montana Gem – a local jewelry business. Katie married Randy Gneiting on October 20th, 1979 and they raised one daughter, Vanessa, within the Columbus community. Her grandson, Jack, was born April 19, 2014 and was the youngest love of her life.

Katie enjoyed reading, music, and finding small acts of kindness. She will forever be remembered for her kind heart, her friendships, and her genuine caring for others.


Katie is survived by her husband, daughter, son-in-law, grandson, step brother, and half-sister. She will be missed wonderfully by all who knew her.
