Obituary of Margaret Hazel Root

Margaret Hazel Root was born July 29, 1916 in the Cash community to Edwin and Clara Rogers and passed away on April 9, 2007. One of 13 children, she spent her early years on the T Bar family ranch northwest of Bison, SD. She attended elementary school in a little prairie schoolhouse at Cash, SD. She attended high school in Hettinger, ND for a time but graduated from Bison High School in 1934. She married Hollis Root on October 5, 1935. She was a housewife and mother, and for many years, served as Clerk of Courts for Perkins County. As the magistrate she often presided over marriages. Mom loved her church and people in Bison and gave of herself to the community. She liked many things, such as traveling, arts and crafts, (being a master at crocheting), bowling, golfing, crossword puzzles and writing stories and poetry. Many will remember her as enjoying Halloween, getting dressed up to fool people. We brought Mom to Tacoma, WA in March of 2005 to live at Mill Ridge Assisted Living until December 2006 when we moved her to Arbor House Adult Family Home. We are most grateful to all the people who so graciously took care of her. She left peacefully in the early morning hours. Margaret is survived by 4 children, Janice (Stanley) Larson of Tacoma, Washington, Jeannie (Bob) Kirksey, of Arlington, Oregon, Sharon (Jerry) Carlson, of Alta Loma, California, and Rickie (Bonnie) Root, of Lake Forest, California, 10 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren ,2 great-great grandsons, 2 brothers, Don (Bonnie) Rogers of Oregon City, Oregon, Bob Rogers of Tillamook, Oregon, numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hollis, her parents and several brothers and sisters.
