Obituary of Alice Louise Bowyer

ALICE LOUISE SCATLIFF KETTERMAN BOWYER Heaven gained another angel when Alice Louise Bowyer went to live with her heavenly Father on February 14, 2008. Alice Louise was born on August 26, 1912, to Alice Louise Chase and H. Kenneth Scatliff, M.D., in the old family home in Chicago, Illinois. After her graduation from Cornell College, she taught in a rural school where she met the first love of her life, Joseph Pratt Ketterman. They married and had two daughters. World War II brought the young family to the west coast so that they could do their part in the war effort—Alice as a draftsman, Joseph as a sheet metalist – at the shipyards in Tacoma. After the death of Joseph in 1944, Alice met and married the second love of her life, Clyde Raymond Bowyer, Sr. They were married for 47 years before his passing in 1993. Alice, as a highway engineer for the state of Washington, helped to initiate the roadside rest areas that we enjoy today. Active in Masonic orders, she is a 50 year member of Olympia Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, and Destiny Court, Order of the Amaranth, serving as Worthy Matron and Royal Matron respectively. She was also a member of White Shrine in Olympia. In addition to her daughters, Edith Louise (Robert) Garberding, Tacoma, and Betty Grace (Ray) Melton, Fox Island, she leaves step children, Clyde Raymond Bowyer, Jr., Carolyn Rae Mallery, and James Leroy (Marilyn) Bowyer, all of Indiana; five grandsons, Donald Lee (Laura) Bartley, Jr., John Allan Bartley, George Raymond (Kim) Melton, James Edward (Lin) Melton, and Kenneth Joe (Tonya) Melton, 12 step grandchildren, nine great grand children, nine step great grandchildren, and 2 great great grandchildren, 11 step great great grandchildren, as well as a brother, James H. (Irene) Scatliff, M.D., Chapel Hill, North Carolina, two nieces, and a cousin, Dorothy Dale Rodi of Hayfork, California. A Celebration of Alice Louise’s life will be held on Sunday, February 24, 2008, at the Weatherly Inn, 6016 North Highland Parkway, at 1:00 pm. Graveside services will follow at 3:30 pm at the Fox Island Cemetery. Mom, you will always remain “Sweet in our memory.” In lieu of flowers, the family request that if you would like to send a donation to the Francsican Hospice House, ESTARL, Amaranth Youth Scholarship Fund or a charity of your choice, it would be most appreciated.
