I met Bob in '76 in Seattle, WA...He was living with Laura in S.D, CA...shacking-up...in the Navy. I was 14 and was about to kick his ass...but decided it was in my best interest to be friends...lucy him?. Bob/Bear told me to never say 'I can't.' He got me get a job at Mare Island Shipyard in '82...thanks!..shop 99! If you have ever had someone teach you how fun life can be...you have met Bob. Ever go up Valley in Napa with Bob? Good times my friends! Since I met Bob, I have told someone a story about him every day. Now, it is two stories a day. I love Bob! He is my best friend. He taught me about life and how to live it. From the Pro Bowl in HI in 2002, to a catfish named George on the Napa River in 1982...(3am, guy story...more beer at 6am), to me, getting 10 people lost on Orcas Island for 3hrs in 1986 for mom's funeral(12mi.in diamiter that Island was)...which I knew that island like the back of my hand!! The stories are endless. Did you ever hang out on the 'Sand Bar' on Oahu with Laura & Bob? ....Great days my friends....I am lucky to have had those times. I know most of your names and have met you at a 'Skoglund Functions'...see you at Bob's Bday Party...I would not miss it for the world. Love you, Alan, Meredith and Jordan McEroy

'Bobby' was my buddy, we worked together in Crane Maintenance in shop 02 at PSNS. Between him and Bud I didn't stand a chance. He certainly knew how to brighten my day and I loved him for it. Ah the stories that man could tell. He was a big teddy bear that gave great hugs. His zest for life was contagious I enjoyed just being in his presence, you knew you would have a great time! Laura, your willingness to share such a wonderful man was such a blessing and I thank you for that. Your doors are always open wide for your family and friends. You are special people and my heart and prayers are with you all always, Breeze

Bob said to me 'Thanks for the Levity in the workplace' my returned look was one of puzzle. As many have stated he was the levity of life. Big Heart and most of all, always bringing some kind of Joy. Peace to you man, and peace to your family. I look forward to our next high-five and a cold one. It will be too long to that next event. You are like the Sun bringing warmth and brightness to a day. I will think of you always.

What can I say. I first met Bob back at Mare Island when he was a punk kid. Heck I was not much older. We had some really great times through the years. I'm glad I got a chance to sit down and talk with Bob after he returned to Puget Sound. Take care bubba and see you I hope not to soon. To Laura and the kids sorry for your loss and if you need anything let me know. PS: I didn't know Bob was born in Lakeport. I used to vacation there every year as a kid. I probibly shared an A&W rootbeer with him in town

Do not stand at my grave and weep; I am not there. I do not sleep. I am thousand winds that blow. I am the diamonds glints on snow. I am the sunlight on ripened grain. I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hush I am the swift uplifting rush of quiet birds in circled flight. I am the soft stars that shine at night. Do not stand at my grave and cry; I am not there I did not die. Bob, 'SAY HELLO TO HEAVEN'- Until we meet again my friend.... ~ Bruce & Debi ~

I started PSNS Code 700 Cranes on 9/17/96, in the Tech Crane Library so I have know Bob for the last eleven years working with him. Bob was a fun person to be around. He always had a smile or a joke for ya. One of the nice things Bob was good at, was saying Thank you and letting you know you did a good job when you did something for him. Most big bosses or foremen don't. So I was always happy to do things or get things Bob requested right away even when he was in Hawaii. I still have a beautiful wooden bowel from Hawaii he sent all of us for sending material he needed right away. He didn't have to include me but he did. HIs smile and laughter will be missed. Your family are in my Prayers. Christy Willis C/700 Tech Crane Library

Bob's laughter and fun loving jokes and smiles made being new to the Shipayrd a breeze. Bob showed me around, introduced me to some great people so I would feel a part of the code and always had an ear to listen if I had a problem or needed a hand. His kindness and caring will long be remembered. My sincere condolances for your loss. God Bless, Sincerly, Kimmer Smestad Code 710.01

I've known Bob since him came to work in Shop 02 at Mare Island back in the late seventies and considered him one of my closest friends. Bob was open, out-going, and the kind of person that just drew people to him. Bob was the kind of guy who would do anything for you and expect nothing in return. He worked hard, he played hard, and it was always a job to be around him. Bob had the rare ability to see the humor in any situation, and he could always tell a great story about it later on. My personal favorite was 'Bruce Harvego and the multi-colored sturgeon', but there were thousands of others, all guaranteed to make you laugh til you cried and Bob would be laughing right along with you. Bob, you brought optimism and hope to all of us. We'll miss you.

My most heart-felt condolences to the Skoglund family. I'll never forget working with Bob, on graveyard, when he was king of the 'air-guitar', especially when Head East's 'Never Been Any Reason' came on the radio. Big Bob was all over the 'stage' when this tune came on. Great guy, great sense of humor, and I miss him a lot.

Putting pen to paper at a time like this re-kindles the sadness felt at Bob's passing, the kind of sadness one feels when a family member is lost. While Bob was not a blood relative, he was as close as a body could get to being a brother. Bob and I go back some 25 years as co-workers and friends. His passing brings to memory the good, bad and many mischievous things we shared. Bob's big heart and kindness touched all who made contact with him. To Laura, Jen, Michelle and Heather... your grief and sadness are mine. To a special man and true friend... 'Until we meet again' Party on Bob..Party on.

Transferring around in Navy for the last 20 years I have developed a routine of not establishing many friendships. Between the Navy and family, I lack the energy for other relationships. Working with Bob here in Hawaii filled an important gap in my life, having a friend. Here is how it went for usI would walk into his office to vent about some awfully important problem. We would discuss the problem for only a few moments, then start exchanging Sea Stories (Tall tales of high seas adventure, beautiful women and daring deeds, told by sailors and ex-sailors that usually have important lessons hidden within, mostly passed from a senior to a junior sailor. Two rules apply; never let the truth get in the way of a good Sea Story and never be afraid to tell another sailors Sea Story as if you where there), we would alternate between laughing until our faces turned purple and trying to top each others stories. Other times, we would be in a serious meeting and with a wink, a nod, or a smile we could communicate volumes. Problems always melted away. Aside from my own father, I have never met a man who reminded me so much of me. Not just the pinkish/reddish completion, freckles, curly hair, and Viking warrior physique; we thought alike and shared the same positive outlook in life. Bob.Fair winds and following seas, shipmate. P.S. I will be using all your material in my future Sea Storiesyou know the rules!

To the Skoglund Ohana; I feel a great sadness at the passing of such a good friend. Bob has been a great blessing to my family and I, in that, during our time of bereavement he showed his great compassion on us. He got me transferred back to Pearl Harbor so that we could take care of my mom. We are forever grateful. While your hearts are healing, please know that my family and I are praying for you. Kimo
