Dear Family and Friends, I have some wonderful memories of studying with Bill from 1980-1984, when we left Tacoma. I was a recent graduate of PLU and wanted to do more vocal study. Bill took me under his wing and opened even more vocal doors for me, post undergraduate education. My wife, Robin, was my accompanist; so we both have some great memories of these times. Gary Lakes was just a new student during this time and had won the Melchoir award. Bill and Margaret ('Mommy') as Bill would call up the stairs to her, even kept Gary their for up to a week, in their house, preparing him for roles and auditions. We were on hand when some of the Romero's came to Tacoma to play with the Tacoma Symphony and Bill would comment on how I looked like Celin. I gained SO much from Bill's artistry and vocal coaching- I can't tell you how much. I had the forsight to try and visit him years later (2004?), just to say hi and have him meet our famiy (two kids, Robin and I). I was so glad we had even this short time---when I could again say a very greatful 'Thank You'. 'Bellisimo Bill!!'

I studied with Mr. Eddy for close to 15 years. No matter how bad the traffic or weather was I knew as soon as I got to his studio I could relax, learn something, have a few laughs, and make some beautiful music. He was by far one of the most influential people in my life. He was a great teacher and the vocal training I received was exactly what I needed both in the beginning and in our later years together. He didn't try to change the way I sang, he just got me to change the way I thought about singing, which made all the difference in the world. Our lessons were great. He would tell funny stories of the great singers, directors and conductors he'd worked with in the past and I only have to close my eyes and I can hear his voice telling me to 'tuck in my sit-down' or see him glance over at the mantle to remind me of the 'swans neck'. One time he asked me why I still called him Mr. Eddy and that I should call him Bill. I said I'd try, but somehow Bill just never caught on with me, and he was okay with that. He'll always be Mr. Eddy to me, a true inspiration and a joy. I will miss him very much and always think of him with great affection.

A visit to Santa Barbara in the summer of 1965 changed my life. Tante Margrete and Uncle Bill introduced me to the fantastic world of professional musicians. The man who had previously been simply my 'California Uncle Bill' suddenly became a world famous singer and teacher. But he remained attainable, approachable, loving, humble, accepting. I'll never forget the moment during that visit, when he sang a snatch of something and I went to the piano, reproducing the basics of it. He came right over, amazed, and asked if I had perfect pitch. I had no idea what perfect pitch meant, but now I do, and I see how keenly tuned in he was to anyone's talent, how supportive he was of others. Now I understand how generous he was, how unthreatened he felt. He told many fascinating stories of his colleagues, but never belittled them or inflated his own importance. He was a man without ego - an incredible anomaly amongst any who have reached the top of their profession. Uncle Bill adored Margrete and his four children. He supported them all in their endeavors, allowed them to be who they were. He loved life, he loved people, he chose optimism over all the alternatives. He infused his students with his expansive worldview, catapulting them far beyond the borders of vocal techniques and traditional repertoire. He enriched the lives of all he met, be they store clerks or opera stars. Uncle Bill, your one life blessed thousands of others. Thank you.Deborah

Mr. Eddy was one of the finest men I have ever known. He was a most wonderful teacher, the kindest mentor, warmest friend, and a little bit of jolly grandpa all wrapped into one, and I loved him very much. I will forever have the fondest memories of being in his voice studio, rain or shine it was a cozy and safe place to learn and remains one of my most favorite places on earth. Because of him, my voice turned into my gift. I am honored and proud to have been his student, and I know I will always miss him. I am so sorry for your family's loss - he meant so much to me, I can only imagine what he meant to you. I wish you all condolences and peace.
