Obituary of Richard Brock

Richard "Dick" Brock Richard "Dick" Brock, the son of Clarence and Anna Brock, was born on September 26, 1928, in Montesano, and passed away peacefully on March 18, 2008, at Franciscan Hospice in Tacoma. Following graduation from Montesano High School in 1946, Dick served in the Marine Corps for two years before continuing his education at Grays Harbor Community College and St. Martin's College. He completed his teaching certificate at Western Washington Teacher College in 1953. Beginning his career for the Tenino School district in 1953, he remained employed with the district until his retirement in 1983. Dick taught elementary education, high school history and physical education, but his true love was coaching. He was the head football coach at Tenino High School for sixteen years, and the head basketball coach for 26 years. His career record for basketball was 328 - 214, which ranks 46th on the Washington State all-time career list. Coach Brock was inducted into the Washington Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002. He was also inducted into the Montesano Hall of Fame as a 3-sport letterman throughout his high school career. The gymnasium in Tenino was dedicated in his honor and is aptly named "Brock Court." He was truly a self-described gym rat. "Coach" spent countless hours dedicating his time and energy to athletes under his direction, and continued to do so after retirement by giving coaching advice to the youth of Tenino and other local schools. Dick is survived by daughters, Kathy Frasier, Karen (Steve) Campbell, Kim (Brian) Barwell; seven grandchildren; three great- grandchildren; along with special friend, Dexter Eddins, who offered much support to Dick over the years, particularly these last few months. He was preceded in death by his long-time companion, Dorothy de Ste. Croix; and granddaughter, Amanda Frasier. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 29, 2008 at the Tenino High School gymnasium. Dick's remains will be inurned at Tahoma National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Tenino High School Dollars for Scholars Fund, at P.O. Box 790, Tenino, WA. 98589.
